Which sites Google's AI cites most in South Africa
The AI Overview sources South Africans see most are social platforms, comparison sites and brands' own websites. In our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, facebook.com was cited in 33 of 86 AI Overviews, youtube.com in 23 and hippo.co.za in 17.
We recorded every source each AI Overview linked to, counted how many Overviews cited each site, and sorted the most frequent ones by type. Knowing which sites your category's answers draw on tells you where to be present.
In short
- 86 Overviews linked to 940 sources on 412 different domains; 310 of those domains were cited in only one Overview.
- facebook.com (33 of 86), youtube.com (23) and hippo.co.za (17) were cited in the most Overviews.
- Among the 41 domains cited in three or more Overviews, brands' own sites took 34% of citations, social and video platforms 30%, comparison sites 16% and publishers 8%.
- 60.1% of links were South African (.za) domains, and 85 of 86 Overviews cited at least one.
- Raw link counts mislead: google.com was linked 86 times, but in only 7 Overviews.

Why count Overviews, not links? One Overview can link to the same site many times. 80 of google.com's 86 links came from four place searches, such as "best hotels in cape town", at 20 links each. carmag.co.za has 14 links, 13 of them in a single Overview.
What types of site get cited?
The long tail is wide, so we typed the 41 domains cited in three or more Overviews. Between them they account for 267 of the 699 site citations (38%).

Comparison sites and publishers
hippo.co.za was cited in 7 insurance, 6 medical aid, 3 banking and 1 government Overview. The other comparison and quote sites were sector specialists: medicalaid.com and medicalaidonline.co.za for medical aid, solarza.co.za and energybee.co.za for solar, and ooba.co.za, a home loan intermediary, for property. Publishers mybroadband.co.za (8 Overviews) and businesstech.co.za (7) spread across telecoms, banking, property, energy and more. Brands' own websites
Brands' own sites were the largest group. personal.nedbank.co.za was cited in 11 Overviews across five sectors: property (3), energy (3), banking (2), government and legal (2), and education and jobs (1). A bank's pages were cited on solar and home-buying questions, not only on banking ones. Banks, insurers and medical schemes dominate the brand group; telecoms and retail brands such as afrihost.com, telkom.co.za and game.co.za appear in three or four Overviews each.
Social, video and forum platforms
51 of 86 Overviews (59%) cited at least one of Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok, Instagram or LinkedIn. facebook.com appeared in 10 of the 12 sectors; the exceptions were medical aid and business (B2B). Government sites
Official sites showed up where the question was about a government service. 6 of the 7 government and legal Overviews with sources cited a .gov.za domain, for passports, IDs, driving licences, tax registration, company registration and police clearance. The exception was "what is popia", whose Overview cited no government domain. Across all 86 Overviews, only 9 cited a .gov.za site.
How local are the sources?
60.1% of all 940 links were .za domains, or 66.2% leaving out Google's own links. 85 of 86 Overviews cited at least one .za site; the exception was "best hotels in cape town", with none in 28 links. The .za figure understates local sources: property24.com, afrihost.com, dailyinvestor.com and hellopeter.com are South African sites on .com, so they count as non-local here.

How we measured this
This is CitedAI's own analysis. On 11 October 2026 we ran 96 searches, 8 in each of 12 sectors, through DataForSEO's live Google results: South Africa, English, desktop, top 20 results, AI Overview loaded. "Cited" means the domain appears in the Overview's reference list. We matched domains by exact name with "www." removed, so personal.nedbank.co.za and business.nedbank.co.za count separately. We typed sites from their own homepages, checked the same day.
Caveats: one day, desktop only; 8 searches per sector; the .za share understates local sites on .com; google.com links are mostly Google's own links, such as Maps and Search. Naming a domain here is a count, not a judgement of the company.
