Google's AI Overviews use social media sources often in South Africa: in our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok and Instagram supplied 111 of the 940 sources cited, and at least one of them appeared in 51 of the 86 Overviews that listed sources. The data cannot tell us why Google chose them. It does show how often, in which sectors, and whether the platforms already ranked.

The searches were common South African questions, eight in each of 12 sectors, checked once on desktop. Treat sector figures as patterns to check, not market statistics.

In short

  • facebook.com was cited 54 times, youtube.com 33, reddit.com 10, tiktok.com 8 and instagram.com 6, across 96 searches.
  • Together they were 11.8% of all cited sources. Only google.com had more references (86 to facebook.com's 54), but they sat in just 7 Overviews, 80 of them from four place searches. Counted by Overviews, facebook.com (33 of 86) led every domain.
  • Automotive, education and jobs, and energy leaned on them most, at over 20% of sources each. Medical aid Overviews cited none.
  • Facebook and Reddit were mostly cited where they already ranked in the top ten. YouTube was cited about as often without ranking as with it.
  • Your official social pages are pages an answer can cite. Keep them as accurate as your website.

How often do AI Overviews cite social media sources?

Here is each platform in our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026:

Platform Times cited Searches whose Overview cited it Of those, searches where it also ranked top ten
facebook.com 54 33 28
youtube.com 33 23 12
reddit.com 10 9 9
tiktok.com 8 8 2
instagram.com 6 6 2

"Times cited" counts every reference, so one Overview can cite facebook.com more than once. The Overview for "how to apply for nsfas" cited it six times. For context on the other sites Google's AI relies on here, see which sites Google's AI cites most in South Africa.

Which sectors leaned on social and video platforms?

The share of each sector's cited sources that came from the five platforms, on 11 October 2026:

Sector Platform references / all references Share
Automotive 16 / 72 22.2%
Education and jobs 16 / 78 20.5%
Energy (solar, backup power) 16 / 79 20.3%
Retail 11 / 67 16.4%
Government and legal 10 / 65 15.4%
Telecoms 11 / 85 12.9%
Business (B2B) 8 / 64 12.5%
Property 10 / 101 9.9%
Banking 5 / 60 8.3%
Travel 6 / 102 5.9%
Insurance 2 / 90 2.2%
Medical aid 0 / 77 0.0%

Each platform had its own pattern. Facebook was cited in 10 of the 12 sectors; its most references came in education and jobs (12) and telecoms (8). YouTube's came mostly in energy (7), business (7), government and legal (6) and automotive (5). Reddit appeared only in energy, property, automotive, telecoms and retail.

At the other end, insurance and medical aid Overviews were built almost entirely from other sources. In those two sectors, South African (.za) domains made up 87.8% and 83.1% of cited sources.

Does a platform need to rank to be cited?

For Facebook and Reddit, it mostly did. facebook.com ranked in the top ten ordinary results for 52 of the 96 searches, and in 28 of the 33 searches where the Overview cited it. reddit.com ranked in the top ten for 23 searches and was cited in 9 of them, never outside them.

YouTube, TikTok and Instagram looked different. youtube.com was cited in 23 Overviews, and in 11 of those it was not among the top ten ordinary results. TikTok and Instagram were cited without a top-ten ranking in most of their few appearances. Our data counted only the top ten ordinary results, not video or image blocks, so we cannot say where else on the page those videos sat.

Google's own documentation sets the bar for any supporting link: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with "no additional technical requirements". Public social pages can meet that bar like any other page. Beyond that, we will not guess at Google's reasons.

What kind of question draws a video?

Among Overviews that listed sources, YouTube was cited in 9 of 21 "how", "what" and similar questions, against 12 of 56 "best", "cheapest" and similar list searches. Examples include "how to sell a house in south africa", "how many solar panels do i need" and "what is popia". It is a small sample, but it fits a simple reading: questions about doing something drew more video sources than questions about choosing something.

What does it mean for brands?

  1. Your official pages are sources. If an Overview in your category cites facebook.com, it may be citing your page or a competitor's. Keep the name, contact details, prices and hours on it identical to your website. GEO for local businesses covers the details.
  2. The conversation about you can be quoted. Reddit threads and Facebook groups are not yours to control. Answer real questions there honestly and as yourself, or not at all.
  3. Explain with video where people ask how. If your customers ask how to install, apply, compare or set something up, a clear, well-titled video is another page an answer can cite.
  4. Check your own category first. The sector differences above are large. Before you spend on any platform, find out which sources your category's answers already cite: how to find the sources AI cites in your category.

What this data cannot tell you

This was one day, desktop only, eight searches per sector. AI Overviews change between days and users. We recorded the domain of each source, not the page, so we cannot say whether a facebook.com reference was a brand page, a group or a post, or whose YouTube video was cited. And it covers Google only, not ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. For the full study, read the state of AI Overviews in South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

How often do Google's AI Overviews cite social media in South Africa?

In our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok and Instagram supplied 111 of the 940 sources the AI Overviews cited, or 11.8%. At least one of them appeared in 51 of the 86 Overviews that listed sources.

Why do Google's AI Overviews cite Facebook?

Our data shows where, not why. facebook.com was cited 54 times in the Overviews for 33 searches, and in 28 of those 33 it also ranked in the top ten ordinary results, so the Overviews mostly cited Facebook where it already ranked.

Which sectors' AI Overviews cite social media most?

Does Reddit get cited in South African AI Overviews?

Yes, but less than Facebook or YouTube. In our 96-search analysis, reddit.com was cited 10 times in the Overviews for 9 searches, in energy, property, automotive, telecoms and retail. In all 9, Reddit also ranked in the top ten ordinary results.

Should brands post more on social media to appear in AI Overviews?

Our data does not show that posting more helps. It shows that these platforms are cited, so keep your official pages accurate and current, and check which platforms your own category's answers cite before you invest.
