Google AI Overviews explained for South African marketers

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows above its ordinary results for some searches, with links to the pages that support them. Google says no special optimisation is needed to appear in them: a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, the same bar as ordinary results.
For South African marketers, the question is no longer whether AI Overviews have arrived. Google's help page lists South Africa among the countries where they are available to all users, and in our own check of common South African searches they appeared almost every time. This guide covers what they are, how they pick sources, what you can control and how to measure them.
In short
- AI Overviews summarise an answer at the top of Google's results and link to supporting pages. They appear only when Google's systems judge they add something.
- In our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, 92 showed an AI Overview.
- To be a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google says no special files, markup or schema are needed.
- Ranking still matters: in 73 of the 86 Overviews that listed sources, at least one cited site also ranked in the top five ordinary results.
- Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews. Snippet controls such as nosnippet and noindex do.
What are Google AI Overviews?
An AI Overview is a short, AI-written summary at the top of a Google results page, with links to the pages it draws on. Google says they are meant to help people grasp a complicated question quickly and then explore the links. Its sibling, AI Mode, is a conversational search for questions that need more reasoning or comparison. Google notes that the two may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links can differ for the same search.
Three points from Google's own pages are worth knowing:
- They do not appear on every search. Google says it shows an AI Overview only when its systems judge it adds to classic Search, and that they often do not trigger.
- Searchers cannot switch them off. Google's help page says AI Overviews are a core Search feature. A searcher can choose the Web filter to see text links only.
- Google warns they can be wrong. Its help page tells searchers that AI Overviews can make mistakes and to check important information in more than one place.
Google's help page lists South Africa among the countries with AI Overviews for all users, and its supported languages include English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Southern Sotho and Tswana.
How often do AI Overviews appear in South Africa?
Very often, for the questions buyers ask. Our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026 covered 12 sectors, from banking and medical aid to solar, cars and government services. 92 of the 96 showed an AI Overview.
| Query shape | Searches | AI Overview shown |
|---|---|---|
| Lists starting "best", "cheapest", "most" or "highest" | 59 | 98.3% |
| Questions starting how, what, when, which, is or where | 25 | 96.0% |
| Other searches | 12 | 83.3% |
Popular searches were slightly less likely to get one. 82.4% of searches with 1,000 or more monthly Google searches in South Africa showed an Overview, against 100% of those with fewer than 100. The high-volume searches without one were tool, booking and place searches, such as "car finance calculator south africa" (2,900 a month) and "kruger national park accommodation" (8,100 a month).
This is one day, on desktop, with 8 searches per sector, so read it as a snapshot. The full results are in our state of AI Overviews in South Africa report.
How do AI Overviews choose their sources?
Google describes the mechanics in general terms. AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique: running several related searches across subtopics and data sources. While the answer is being written, Google's models find more supporting pages, which lets it show a wider and more varied set of links than a classic results page.
What the South African data shows:
- Many sources per answer. The 86 Overviews that listed sources cited 10.9 on average.
- Ranking still counts. In 73 of those 86 (85%), at least one cited site also ranked in the top five ordinary results for the same search. In 81 (94%), at least one ranked in the top ten.
- Local sources dominate. 60.1% of cited sources were South African (.za) domains. That understates local sites, because South African companies on .com addresses count as non-.za.
- Platforms and comparison sites recur. The most-cited domains were google.com (86 times, mostly Google's own links such as Maps, but in only 7 Overviews, 80 of them from four place searches), facebook.com (54), youtube.com (33) and hippo.co.za (28).
We break the sources down by sector in which sites Google's AI cites in South Africa.
What can you control in AI Overviews?
Google's position is that AI Overviews follow the same rules as Search. These are the controls it documents:
| Control | What it does, according to Google |
|---|---|
| robots.txt rules for Googlebot | Control crawling for Search. Google says AI is built into Search, so this is also the crawling control for its AI features |
| nosnippet | No text snippet for the page, and its content is not used as a direct input for AI Overviews or AI Mode |
| data-nosnippet | Keeps the marked sections of a page out of snippets |
| max-snippet | Caps the snippet length, and also limits how much of the page may be used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| noindex | Keeps the page out of Google's search results altogether |
| Google-Extended | Governs use of your content for Gemini training and grounding in some other Google systems. It does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search |
Google also says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear. If you use structured data, it must match what is visible on the page. These rules work only if Googlebot is allowed to fetch the page that carries them, and they take effect after Google recrawls it, which Google says can take from several days to several months.
How do you measure AI Overviews?
Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode within overall Search traffic in Search Console's Performance report, under the Web search type. Google also says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, meaning visitors spend more time on the site. That is Google's claim about its own product; check it against your own conversion data.
Search Console will not tell you whether your page was cited, or which competitors were. For that you need to check the results pages for your questions on a schedule, as we did for the analysis above, and record which sites each Overview cites. Overviews change between days, so compare like with like over time.
What should South African marketers do about AI Overviews?
- Fix the SEO basics first. Pages must be crawlable, indexed and snippet-eligible. Google adds that crawling must be allowed by your CDN or hosting, not just robots.txt.
- Rank for the questions. Most Overviews in our data cited at least one top-five site. Weak SEO usually means no citation.
- Answer in text, near the top. State the answer, then the specifics: prices in rand, dates, conditions and comparisons.
- Keep your Google data current. Google lists Business Profile and Merchant Center information among the things to keep up to date for its AI features.
- Be on the sites that get cited. In many sectors the sources include comparison sites, publishers and social platforms, not only brand websites.
- Track a fixed list of searches. Note which show an Overview and who it cites, every month, and do not over-read a single day.
