Does ranking first get you cited in AI Overviews? South African data

Ranking first does not guarantee a citation in Google's AI Overviews. In our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, the site ranking first was cited in 45 of the 86 AI Overviews that listed sources (52%). Ranking still helps: most Overviews cited at least one top-five site. But the link between position and citation is loose.
We compared each Overview's cited sources with the ten ordinary results below it, site by site. Here is what the overlap looks like.
In short
- The site ranking first was cited in 45 of 86 Overviews (52%); the site ranking second in 49 of 85 (58%).
- Citation rates fall only gently with rank: 52% at first place, 49% at second and third, 46% at fourth and fifth, 39% at sixth to tenth.
- 73 of 86 Overviews (85%) cited at least one top-five site, and 81 (94%) a top-ten site.
- More than half of all site citations (366 of 699, each site counted once per Overview) went to sites outside the top ten for that search.
- Sites listed two or more times in the top ten were cited 61% of the time, against 42% for sites listed once.
How closely do AI Overview citations follow rankings?
Loosely. For each search, we checked whether the site at each ordinary position was among the Overview's sources. Where a site held two positions, we counted it at its higher one.
| Organic position | Cited in the AI Overview | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 45 of 86 | 52% |
| 2 | 49 of 85 | 58% |
| 3 | 34 of 83 | 41% |
| 4 | 38 of 81 | 47% |
| 5 | 34 of 77 | 44% |
| 6 | 31 of 73 | 42% |
| 7 | 30 of 74 | 41% |
| 8 | 27 of 70 | 39% |
| 9 | 25 of 69 | 36% |
| 10 | 20 of 54 | 37% |
With this many searches, the gap between first and second place is noise. The trend is the point: a first-place site was cited about half the time, and a site at sixth to tenth place a little under 40% of the time (133 of 340). Higher positions went with better odds. They did not settle them.
When the Overview skipped the first-placed site (41 times), it usually cited another ranking site instead: another top-five site in 28 of those 41, another top-ten site in 36.
How many cited sites rank in the top ten?
About half. Counting each site once per Overview, the 86 Overviews made 699 site citations:
- 200 (28.6%) went to sites in the top five for that search.
- 333 (47.6%) went to sites in the top ten.
- 366 (52.4%) went to sites that were not in the top ten.
These counts include google.com, whose links are mostly Google's own. Leave it out and 359 of 692 site citations (51.9%) went to sites outside the top ten.
We kept only the top ten ordinary results, so "not in the top ten" covers sites on page two as well as sites that did not rank for that exact search. Five Overviews cited no top-ten site at all, including "best credit card south africa" and "best inverter for home south africa".
Where does ranking matter more?
Direct questions followed rankings more closely than lists:
| Query shape | Overviews with sources | First-placed site cited |
|---|---|---|
| how/what/when question | 21 | 14 (67%) |
| "best", "cheapest" or similar list | 56 | 27 (48%) |
| other | 9 | 4 (44%) |
By sector, the first-placed site was cited in 6 of 7 government and legal Overviews and 6 of 8 insurance Overviews, but in only 2 of 6 automotive and 2 of 7 education and jobs Overviews. Each sector has 8 or fewer Overviews, so these are directions, not rules. Our state of AI Overviews in South Africa has the full sector table.
Reddit, Facebook or YouTube held first place 9 times and were cited in 4 of those; other first-placed sites were cited in 41 of 77. Nine cases are too few to call that a difference.
Does being listed more than once help?
It went with a higher rate. Sites that appeared two or more times in the top ten were cited in 49 of 80 cases (61%). Sites listed once were cited in 284 of 672 (42%). This is a correlation: sites with several ranking pages may simply be stronger on the topic.
What should you do with this?
- Keep doing SEO. 81 of 86 Overviews cited a top-ten site. Ranking sites made up a large share of what Overviews cited, as we set out in SEO vs GEO.
- Do not treat first place as the finish line. Half of first-placed sites were not cited. Check the Overview itself, not just your position.
- Answer the question on the page. The data here cannot say why one ranking page is cited and another is not. Lab research gives a direction: in the GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), adding quotations raised a page's visibility score in AI answers from 19.5 to 27.8, adding statistics to 25.9 and citing sources to 24.9, with results varying by subject.
- Measure citations directly, on the same questions, over time. See how to measure GEO.
How we measured this
On 11 October 2026 we ran 96 searches, 8 in each of 12 sectors, through DataForSEO's live Google results: South Africa, English, desktop, top 20 results, AI Overview loaded. We kept the top ten ordinary (organic) results for each search. "Cited" means the domain appears in the Overview's reference list. We matched domains by exact name with "www." removed, so a bank's "personal." and "business." sites count as different sites.
Caveats: one day, desktop only; 86 Overviews with sources is a sample, not every search; matching is by domain, not by page, so a cited page may not be the one that ranked; and overlap shows correlation, not that ranking causes citation.
Frequently asked questions
Does ranking first on Google get you cited in AI Overviews?
Not reliably. In 86 South African AI Overviews that listed sources on 11 October 2026, the site ranking first was cited in 45 (52%). The site in second place was cited about as often, in 49 of 85.
Do AI Overviews cite sites that are not in the top ten?
Yes, often. Of 699 site citations in 86 South African AI Overviews on 11 October 2026, 366 (52%) went to sites that did not appear in the top ten ordinary results for that search.
Does SEO still matter for AI Overviews?
Yes. 81 of 86 South African AI Overviews checked on 11 October 2026 cited at least one site from the top ten ordinary results, and 73 cited one from the top five. Ranking is not enough on its own, but it helps.
Does having more than one page ranking help you get cited in AI Overviews?
In a 2026 South African sample it went with a higher citation rate: sites listed two or more times in the top ten were cited 61% of the time (49 of 80), against 42% for sites listed once. That is a correlation, not proof of cause.
Which searches follow Google rankings most closely in AI Overviews?
