How to find the sources AI cites in your category

AI citation sources are the web pages an AI answer links to as its evidence. To find the ones in your category, put your buyers' questions to Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, record every source each answer cites, and tally them by domain and by type. The result is a map of where AI answers about your category get their material, and so of where your brand needs to be present and described correctly.
Most marketing teams already know which sites rank for their category. Far fewer know which sites the answers are built from. The two lists overlap, but less than you might expect.
In short
- Every major engine shows its sources when it searches: Google's AI Overviews list supporting links, and the OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini APIs return citations with each answer.
- Rankings alone will not reveal the sources. In our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, counting each site once per Overview, about half the site citations (359 of 692 excluding Google's own links, or 366 of 699 including them) went to sites not in the top ten ordinary results for that search.
- A few domains recur and a long tail appears once: the Overviews cited 412 different domains, and 310 of them appeared in only one Overview.
- Classify sources by type: your site, competitors, comparison sites, publishers, social and forums, government.
- Repeat the exercise every quarter.
Why do AI citation sources matter?
When an assistant searches before it answers, it writes from the pages it reads. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use a 'query fan-out' technique" to find supporting pages and "display a wider and more diverse set of helpful links." Google also says there are "no additional requirements" to appear as a supporting link, beyond a page being indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.
So the cited pages shape what your buyers read. If your brand is missing from them, or described wrongly on them, the answer has nothing correct about you to draw on. In our 11 October 2026 analysis, an Overview cited 10.9 sources on average, and 60.1% of all cited sources were South African (.za) domains. That share understates local sites, because South African companies on .com addresses count as non-.za. Only 1 Overview with sources cited no South African domain at all.
How to find the sources, step by step
- Start from your question set. Use the same unbranded buyer questions you measure; see how to build a GEO question set. Thirty questions is a workable first pass.
- Record Google's AI Overview sources. Search from South Africa in a private window, expand the Overview and note every linked source with the date. Overviews change between days, so the date matters.
- Record ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude sources. Each engine decides for itself whether to search, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all document this. When it does search, the answer carries citations. OpenAI's documentation says responses include "inline citations for URLs found in the web search results". Anthropic says citations "are always enabled" for Claude's web search. Gemini returns citations that link parts of the answer to source URLs. Note every answer that cites nothing: it came from the model's memory.
- Tally by domain, two ways. Count total citations and the number of answers citing each domain. They tell different stories. In our data, carmag.co.za was cited 14 times but in only 2 Overviews, while hippo.co.za was cited 28 times across 17 Overviews.
- Classify each domain by type, using the table below.
- Open the cited pages. Note what kind of page each is (a "best of" list, a comparison table, a forum thread, a product page), how recent it is, and whether your brand appears on it and is described correctly.
- Compare with ordinary rankings. Sources that do not rank well for the search are the easiest to miss if you only track rankings.
What types of sites does AI cite in South Africa?
These examples come from our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026. It is one day's snapshot on desktop, with 8 searches per sector, so treat it as an illustration of the kinds of source, not a ranking.
| Type of source | Examples (times cited) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Comparison sites | hippo.co.za (28, in banking, insurance, medical aid and government searches) | Your products should be listed and current |
| Listings and marketplaces | autotrader.co.za (17), property24.com (8) | Keep listings, dealer and agent profiles complete |
| Social, video and forums | facebook.com (54), youtube.com (33), reddit.com (10), tiktok.com (8), instagram.com (6) | Cited in 51 of the 86 Overviews that listed sources |
| Government | gov.za (4), sars.gov.za (3), nsfas.org.za (3), cipc.co.za (2) | The reference point for rules, fees and processes |
The single most-cited domain was google.com (86 times), but those references sat in only 7 Overviews, 80 of them from four place searches such as "best hotels in cape town", and are mostly Google's own links, such as Maps and Search results, so we leave it out of the table. Our full breakdown is in which sites Google's AI cites most in South Africa, and the social platforms get their own analysis in why Google's AI cites Facebook, YouTube and Reddit.
Why your category's sources will look different
The mix changes sharply by sector. In our sample, 87.8% of the sources cited in insurance Overviews were South African (.za) domains; in travel, 8.8%. The most-cited domains differed too:
- Telecoms: facebook.com (8), mybroadband.co.za (7), afrihost.com (5).
- Energy: energybee.co.za (11), solarza.co.za (7), youtube.com (7).
- Automotive: autotrader.co.za (17), carmag.co.za (14), cars.co.za (7).
- Medical aid: keyhealthmedical.co.za (12), hippo.co.za (10), medicalaid.com (9).
- Property (leaving out Google's own links): ooba.co.za (10), property24.com (8), facebook.com (5).
Each of those rests on 8 searches. Your own map, built from your own questions, is the one to act on.
What should you do with the list?
- Fix what you control first: your own pages, product listings, directory entries and Google Business Profile.
- Correct errors on other sites. Send the publisher or platform the correct facts with a source.
- Earn a place where you are missing. Our guide to digital PR for AI visibility in South Africa covers how to approach the publishers and comparison sites on your list.
- Write the page that is missing. If answers cite a forum thread because nobody has published a clear answer, publish one.
- Re-check every quarter, and before any PR or content push, on the same questions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I see which sources an AI answer used?
In Google, expand the AI Overview and read its linked sources. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude show citations when they search the web; an answer with no sources was most likely written from what the model learned in training.
Do AI Overviews only cite sites that rank on page one?
No. In CitedAI's analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, counting each site once per AI Overview, about half the site citations (359 of 692, excluding Google's own links) went to sites not in the top ten ordinary results for that search.
Which sites does Google's AI cite most in South Africa?
In a one-day desktop sample of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, the most-cited domains after Google's own links were facebook.com (54 times), youtube.com (33) and hippo.co.za (28), followed by autotrader.co.za (17), carmag.co.za (14) and mybroadband.co.za (12).
How often should we check which sources AI cites?
Quarterly, plus a check before any PR or content push. Sources vary between searches and days: in a 96-search South African sample on 11 October 2026, 310 of the 412 cited domains appeared in only one AI Overview.
What should I do if a page AI cites describes my brand wrongly?
Contact the site with the correct facts and a source for them, and make sure the same facts are stated clearly on your own website. Then re-check the answers that cite that page.
