State of Google AI Overviews in South Africa: 96 searches, October 2026

AI Overviews in South Africa are now the default for common questions: Google showed one on 92 of the 96 South African searches we ran on 11 October 2026 (95.8%). They appeared for medical aid, solar, cars, fibre, government services and more, and they cited South African sites most of the time.
We put 96 common questions, 8 from each of 12 sectors, to Google South Africa and recorded the AI Overview, every source it linked to, and the ordinary results below it. This post is the summary. The sector posts go deeper.
In short
- An AI Overview appeared on 92 of 96 searches (95.8%), including all 45 searches with fewer than 100 monthly searches or no measurable volume.
- Overviews that listed sources linked to 10.9 sources on average, from 8.1 different websites.
- 60.1% of cited links were South African (.za) domains, and 85 of 86 Overviews with sources cited at least one.
- Ranking helps but does not decide it: 73 of 86 Overviews cited a top-five site, but the site ranking first was cited in only 45.
- facebook.com was cited in 33 of 86 Overviews, more than any other site.
How often do AI Overviews appear in South Africa?
On 92 of 96 searches. In 86 of those 92, the Overview listed its sources; 6 showed an Overview without a source list, for example "what is gap cover".
The four searches without an Overview were tool, booking, place and job searches:
- "kruger national park accommodation" (8,100 searches a month): Google showed hotel listings instead.
- "car finance calculator south africa" (2,900 a month).
- "best wine farms in stellenbosch" (1,300 a month): Google showed local business listings.
- "how to get a job in south africa" (210 a month): Google showed job listings.
Which sectors see the most AI Overviews?
Nine of the 12 sectors showed an Overview on all 8 searches. Each row below rests on 8 searches, so read the differences as directions, not market statistics.
| Sector | Overview shown | Avg links cited | .za share of links | Cites a top-5 site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Banking | 8/8 | 8.6 | 73.3% | 5/7 |
| Insurance | 8/8 | 11.2 | 87.8% | 7/8 |
| Medical aid | 8/8 | 11.0 | 83.1% | 6/7 |
| Property | 8/8 | 14.4 | 47.5% | 7/7 |
| Energy (solar) | 8/8 | 9.9 | 60.8% | 6/8 |
| Automotive | 7/8 | 12.0 | 73.6% | 5/6 |
| Telecoms | 8/8 | 10.6 | 69.4% | 8/8 |
| Retail | 8/8 | 8.4 | 67.2% | 7/8 |
| Travel | 6/8 | 20.4 | 8.8% | 3/5 |
| Education and jobs | 7/8 | 11.1 | 55.1% | 7/7 |
| Business (B2B) | 8/8 | 8.0 | 42.2% | 6/8 |
| Government and legal | 8/8 | 9.3 | 70.8% | 6/7 |
The last column counts only Overviews that listed sources. Travel stands out: 60 of its cited links pointed to google.com, mostly Google's own links such as Maps, which pushes its .za share down. Insurance had the most local sources, at 87.8%. We break down banking, insurance and medical aid and cars, telecoms and retail separately.
Does the type of question matter?
List-style questions almost always got an Overview. So did rarely searched ones.
| Query shape | Searches | Overview shown |
|---|---|---|
| "best", "cheapest" or similar list | 59 | 98.3% |
| how/what/when question | 25 | 96.0% |
| other | 12 | 83.3% |
| Monthly searches (Google Ads, SA) | Searches | Overview shown |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 or more | 17 | 82.4% |
| 100 to 999 | 34 | 97.1% |
| under 100 | 31 | 100% |
| no measurable volume | 14 | 100% |
The high-volume band scores lowest only because three of the four searches without an Overview sit in it. The practical point: the long tail of specific questions, the ones keyword tools barely register, is where Overviews were most reliable.
What do AI Overviews cite?
The 86 Overviews with sources linked to 940 sources from 412 different domains. 310 of those domains were cited in just one Overview, so the long tail is wide.
The sites cited in the most Overviews were facebook.com (33 of 86), youtube.com (23), hippo.co.za (17) and personal.nedbank.co.za (11). Raw link counts can mislead: google.com was linked 86 times, but in only 7 Overviews, and 80 of those links came from four place searches such as "best hotels in cape town". Our breakdown of the sites Google's AI cites in South Africa sorts them by type.
Wording seems to matter too. Leaving out Google's own links, the 74 Overviews with sources for searches that contained the words "south africa" drew 68.8% of their links from .za domains (506 of 735). The 12 for searches without those words drew 49.6% (59 of 119). Those 12 include several city searches and generic questions, so treat this as an observation, not a rule.
Do AI Overviews cite the sites that rank?
Usually, but not always the top one. 73 of 86 Overviews (85%) cited at least one site from the top five ordinary results, and 81 of 86 (94%) cited a top-ten site. The site ranking first was cited in 45 of 86 (52%). We look at the overlap position by position in does ranking first get you cited in AI Overviews?
What else is on the results page?
Google's other features were steady around the Overview. "People also ask" appeared on 94 of 96 searches (97.9%) and related searches on 94. Videos appeared on 13, images on 10, discussion and forum results on 6, ads on 5 and local business listings on 4, all on desktop on the day.
What this means for South African marketers
- Assume your buyers see an Overview first. On these 96 searches, they almost always would have.
- Write for specific questions. Searches with no measurable volume got an Overview every time, and they are the questions few competitors answer well.
- Know which sites your category's Overviews cite. Comparison sites, publishers, social platforms and brands' own pages all appear, in different mixes per sector.
- Measure the answer, not just the ranking. A top position won the citation only about half the time.
How we measured this
This is CitedAI's own analysis. On 11 October 2026 we ran 96 searches through DataForSEO's live Google results, set to South Africa, English and desktop, with the top 20 results and the AI Overview loaded. Monthly volumes are Google Ads averages for South Africa; 14 searches had no measurable volume, 2 of them because they exceed Google Ads' 10-word limit. "Cited" means the domain appears in the Overview's reference list. We matched domains by name, with "www." removed.
Caveats:
- One day, one device type (desktop). AI Overviews change between days and between users.
- 96 searches, 8 per sector: a sample of common questions, not all searches.
- The .za share counts domains ending in .za, so South African sites on .com count as non-local. It understates local sources.
- google.com links are mostly Google's own links, such as Maps and Search, not ordinary web pages.
Frequently asked questions
How often do AI Overviews appear in South Africa?
In an analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, an AI Overview appeared on 92 of them (95.8%). The searches were common questions across 12 sectors, checked on desktop on one day, so treat the figure as a snapshot, not a market statistic.
Do AI Overviews cite South African websites?
Mostly. On 11 October 2026, 60.1% of the links cited in 86 South African AI Overviews were South African .za domains, and 85 of the 86 cited at least one. The true local share is higher, because South African sites on .com, such as property24.com, were not counted as local.
Which South African searches did not show an AI Overview?
Four of 96: a car finance calculator search, a Kruger National Park accommodation search, a Stellenbosch wine farm search and a job search. Three of those showed another Google feature instead: hotel listings, local business listings or job listings.
Do low-volume searches get AI Overviews?
Yes. All 45 searches with fewer than 100 monthly searches, or no measurable volume, showed an AI Overview on 11 October 2026, compared with 14 of the 17 searches with 1,000 or more a month.
Does ranking first guarantee a citation in an AI Overview?
No. In 86 South African AI Overviews with sources, the site ranking first was cited in 45. Ranking still helps: 73 of the 86 cited at least one site from the top five ordinary results.
