AI Overviews in South African banking, insurance and medical aid searches

AI search in financial services in South Africa is already on the results page: Google showed an AI Overview on all 24 banking, insurance and medical aid searches we ran on 11 October 2026. Those Overviews leaned on providers' own websites and comparison sites, and almost never on social media.
This post looks at the financial services slice of our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches. Each sector rests on 8 searches, so read it as a well-documented sample, not a market statistic.
In short
- 24 of 24 financial services searches showed an AI Overview; 22 listed their sources.
- 82.4% of the links those Overviews cited were South African (.za) domains, against 60.1% across all 96 searches.
- All 22 Overviews cited at least one bank's, insurer's or medical aid provider's own site, and provider sites made up half of all sites cited.
- hippo.co.za was cited in 16 of 22 Overviews; comparison sites appeared in 18 of 22.
- Social platforms barely featured: none of the 7 medical aid Overviews cited one.
How often do AI Overviews appear in financial services searches?
Every time, on the day. The Overview appeared on high-demand searches such as "best medical aid south africa" and "cheapest medical aid south africa" (4,400 searches a month each in Google Ads data) and on rare ones such as "best business insurance south africa" (30 a month). Two Overviews showed no source list: "which bank has the lowest fees in south africa" and "what is gap cover".
| Sector | Overview shown | Listed sources | Avg links cited | .za share of links | Cites a top-5 site | Cites the #1 site |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Banking | 8/8 | 7 | 8.6 | 73.3% | 5/7 | 3/7 |
| Insurance | 8/8 | 8 | 11.2 | 87.8% | 7/8 | 6/8 |
| Medical aid | 8/8 | 7 | 11.0 | 83.1% | 6/7 | 4/7 |
Insurance had the most local sources of all 12 sectors in the study. Across the three sectors, 18 of 22 Overviews cited at least one site from the top five ordinary results, and the site ranking first was cited in 13 of 22.
Which sites do AI Overviews cite for banking, insurance and medical aid?
The 22 Overviews cited 91 different domains. These were cited in the most Overviews:
| Domain | Type | Overviews citing it (of 22) |
|---|---|---|
| hippo.co.za | Comparison site | 16 |
| momentum.co.za | Financial services provider | 9 |
| discovery.co.za | Financial services provider | 7 |
| keyhealthmedical.co.za | Medical scheme | 6 |
| outsurance.co.za | Insurer | 6 |
| capitecbank.co.za | Bank | 6 |
| facebook.com | Social platform | 6 |
| medicalaid.com | Comparison site | 5 |
| medicalaidonline.co.za | Comparison site | 5 |
| bestmed.co.za | Medical scheme | 5 |
Counting each site once per Overview, the 22 Overviews made 181 site citations. 91 of them (50%) went to providers' own sites: banks, insurers and medical aid providers. 30 (17%) went to five comparison sites. Social platforms (Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn) took 8 (4%).
How each sector differed
Banking. All 7 banking Overviews with sources cited at least one bank's own site. standardbank.co.za and capitecbank.co.za each appeared in 4. The broadest question, "best bank for small business south africa", pulled the widest net: 21 links from 20 different sites, and only 10 of the 21 links went to .za domains.
Insurance. Comparison sites dominated. hippo.co.za was cited in 7 of 8 insurance Overviews (13 links in all) and outsurance.co.za in 6. The review platform hellopeter.com was cited in 2. It is South African but on .com, so it counts as non-local in the .za share.
Medical aid. Every one of the 7 Overviews with sources cited at least one medical aid provider's own site, and 4.7 different provider sites on average. Comparison sites ran alongside them: hippo.co.za in 6, medicalaidonline.co.za in 5 and medicalaid.com in 4. medicalaid.com's own site says it is run by Hippo Comparative Services. Across the three sectors, hippo.co.za or medicalaid.com appeared in 17 of the 22 Overviews.
Does social media matter in financial services AI Overviews?
Much less than elsewhere. Social and video platforms appeared in 4 of 7 banking Overviews, 2 of 8 insurance Overviews and none of the 7 medical aid Overviews. Compare that with all 6 car Overviews and 7 of 8 solar Overviews in the same study (see cars, telecoms and retail). For medical aid and insurance, on this evidence, the Overview reads providers and comparison sites, not Facebook threads.
What should financial services marketers do?
- Make product pages answer the question. Provider pages were half of all citations. A page that states fees, cover limits or monthly costs plainly, with a date, gives the Overview something to quote. In the GEO research paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), adding statistics to a page raised its visibility score in AI answers from 19.5 to 25.9 on the authors' test queries; results varied by subject.
- Check how comparison sites describe you. They were cited in 18 of 22 Overviews. Your listing there is part of the answer.
- Track questions without your name in them. "Best", "cheapest" and "how much" questions are where Overviews choose between providers.
- Measure per question, over time. One day's Overview is one draw. Our study of the sites Google's AI cites in South Africa shows how much sources vary.

How we measured this
On 11 October 2026 we ran 24 banking, insurance and medical aid searches, part of a 96-search study, through DataForSEO's live Google results: South Africa, English, desktop, top 20 results, AI Overview loaded. Volumes are Google Ads monthly averages for South Africa. "Cited" means the domain appears in the Overview's reference list. We classified site types from each site's own homepage on the same day.
Caveats: one day, desktop only; 8 searches per sector; the .za share understates local sites on .com, such as medicalaid.com and hellopeter.com. Nothing here is financial advice or a judgement of any provider.
