GEO for local businesses in South Africa: how to be named when customers ask AI

Local business AI search in South Africa is what happens when a customer asks Google or an AI assistant for a business near them and gets a written answer that names a few options, instead of a list of links. To be one of those names, a local business needs a complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, and the same name, address and phone number everywhere it is listed.
On 11 October 2026 we checked 96 common Google South Africa searches across 12 sectors, eight per sector, on desktop. 92 of them showed an AI Overview above the ordinary results. Only a handful were questions about a specific place, but those behaved differently from the rest, and that difference is what this guide is about.
In short
- An AI Overview appeared on 92 of 96 Google South Africa searches we checked on 11 October 2026.
- When the question was about a place, the Overview leaned on Google's own links: 80 of google.com's 86 references came from just four place searches.
- facebook.com was cited 54 times, in the Overviews for 33 of the 96 searches. For a local business, the Facebook page is a source, not only a channel.
- Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help.
- Consistency is the cheapest win: one name, one address, one phone number, on every listing.
How does local business AI search work in South Africa?
An assistant names a business either from what its model learned in training or from pages it finds when it searches the web at the moment of the question. For a plumber in Benoni or a dentist in Durbanville, the second route matters most, because few models will have learned much about a small business from training data alone.
Google is explicit about its own AI features. A page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and "there are no additional technical requirements". Among the best practices it lists is "checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date". So for Google, the Business Profile is part of the job, in its own words.
Other assistants run their own search crawlers. OpenAI, for example, states that sites which opt out of its OAI-SearchBot crawler "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". A local business website that blocks AI search crawlers by accident can drop out of those answers.
What did Google's AI cite for South African place searches?
In our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, google.com had the most references of any domain, 86, but they sat in only 7 Overviews. They were not spread evenly. Almost all of them came from searches about places:
| Search (Google South Africa, 11 October 2026) | Sources cited | Of which google.com |
|---|---|---|
| best areas to buy property in johannesburg | 37 | 20 |
| best beaches in south africa | 30 | 20 |
| best hotels in cape town | 28 | 20 |
| best weekend getaways from johannesburg | 25 | 20 |
| digital marketing agency johannesburg | 8 | 3 |
That is 83 of 86 google.com references from five searches. In this data, google.com references are mostly Google's own links, such as Maps and Search. Our data records the domain of each reference, not the exact page, so we cannot say which business listings they pointed to.
Two other place searches showed no AI Overview at all. "best wine farms in stellenbosch" (about 1,300 searches a month) showed a local pack: a map with business listings. "kruger national park accommodation" (about 8,100 a month) showed a hotels pack. Either way, the results page put Google's own business listings in front of the searcher. Google's help is clear about how a business gets into those: "To show your business on Search, Maps, and other Google services, you must add or claim your business."
Why does Facebook matter so much for local AI answers?
facebook.com had the second-most references in our 96 searches, 54, and appeared in more AI Overviews than any other domain: those for 33 searches, across 10 of the 12 sectors. It also ranked in the top ten ordinary results for 52 of the 96 searches, and in 28 of the 33 searches where the Overview cited it.
The data shows domains only, so we cannot tell whether a reference was a business page, a group or a post. The practical point still stands. If a South African customer's question can be answered from facebook.com, the details on your page may be what the answer repeats. Keep its name, address, phone number and trading hours identical to your website and Business Profile. We look at the social platforms in more detail in why Google's AI cites Facebook, YouTube and Reddit.
Review sites appear too. hellopeter.com was cited in the Overviews for two insurance searches, "best funeral cover south africa" and "best home insurance south africa".
What should a local business fix first?
- Add or claim your Google Business Profile, and verify it. Google says verification "tells Google that you're authorized to represent the business."
- Complete every field. Google's help says "businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results". That means address or service area, hours (including special hours over public holidays), category and attributes.
- Use your real-world name. Google's guidelines say the name "should reflect your business's real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery", and that adding unnecessary information is not permitted. For example, a fictional dealership would list "Tandem Motors", not "Tandem Motors Best Used Cars Pretoria".
- Use a local phone number. Google asks for a number that connects to the individual location, and a local number instead of a central call centre where possible.
- Ask every customer for a review. Google suggests a link or QR code. Never offer a discount or freebie in return: Google prohibits incentives for reviews.
- Reply to reviews, good and bad. Google says replying "shows that you value their feedback".
- Match your NAP everywhere. Name, address and phone number should read the same on your website, Business Profile, Facebook page and every directory.
- Give each location or service its own web page, with the address and plain answers to the questions customers ask before they call.
Google also states that "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." None of this can be bought.
How do directories and listing sites fit in?
Google describes prominence as "how well-known a business is", based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. Directories, local publications and industry bodies are where those links come from.
They also show up as sources. Across our 96 searches, Overviews cited South African comparison and listing sites repeatedly: hippo.co.za 28 times, autotrader.co.za 17 times and property24.com 8 times. Before you pay for any listing, check whether the answers in your category already cite it. If two directories with the same name spelt two ways list you, fix that too: how to stop AI confusing your brand covers the details.
How do you know if it is working?
Write down ten questions your customers actually ask, with the suburb or city in them. Ask them on Google and on at least one assistant, more than once, and record whether you are named, whether you are named first, and which sources the answer cites. Repeat monthly on the same questions. Treat small samples with care: below 30 answers, a single answer moves a percentage by more than three points.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Google Business Profile help with AI Overviews?
Google lists keeping your Business Profile information up to date among its best practices for its AI features, and says there are no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. A complete, verified profile is the first job for any local business.
Why do Google's AI answers cite Facebook for South African searches?
In our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, facebook.com was cited 54 times, in the AI Overviews for 33 of the searches. In 28 of those 33, Facebook also ranked in the top ten ordinary results, so a business's Facebook page can end up as a source in the answer.
Can a business pay Google for a better local ranking?
No. Google's Business Profile help states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. Ads are a separate, labelled product.
Can I offer customers a discount in exchange for a Google review?
No. Google's review guidance treats incentives such as free or discounted goods in exchange for reviews as fake and misleading content, and prohibits them. You can ask every customer for an honest review with a link or a QR code.
What does NAP consistency mean?
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Keeping all three identical on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook page and directory listings means every listing clearly describes the same business, to people and to search engines.
