Digital PR for AI visibility is the work of earning accurate mentions of your brand on the publications, comparison sites and communities that AI answers already cite. When an assistant reads those pages to answer a buyer's question, your brand is there to be found. Traditional PR counts coverage and reach. For AI visibility, what counts is whether the coverage sits on a page the answers draw from, and whether the answers change afterwards.

South African PR teams already have most of the skills this needs. What changes is how targets are chosen and how success is measured.

In short

  • AI answers that search the web are written from a small set of pages. A mention on those pages gives the answer something to say about you.
  • South African publishers recur in Google's AI Overviews. In our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, mybroadband.co.za was cited 12 times in 8 Overviews, and businesstech.co.za 9 times in 7 Overviews across 5 sectors.
  • Map the sources first, then pitch. The right target is the site cited for your buyers' questions, not the site with the biggest audience.
  • Give journalists what makes a page quotable: original figures, clear quotes and named sources.
  • Measure PR by the answers it changes, on a fixed set of questions.

Why does digital PR affect AI answers?

When ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude search the web before answering, they cite the pages they used: OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all document this for their APIs. Google's AI Overviews list supporting links too, and Google says there are "no additional requirements" to appear among them beyond a page being indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.

Most of those pages are not yours. In our 11 October 2026 analysis, an AI Overview cited 10.9 sources on average. Most are local: 60.1% of all cited sources were South African (.za) domains, a figure that understates local sources because South African companies on .com addresses count as non-.za. Only 1 of the 86 Overviews that listed sources cited no South African domain at all. A buyer asking about your category in South Africa is reading an answer written largely from South African pages, and most of them belong to someone else.

Which South African publications and sites does AI already cite?

These sites were cited repeatedly in our analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026. It is one day's snapshot on desktop, with 8 searches per sector. Read it as examples of the kinds of site that become sources, not as a target list for your category.

Site Type Times cited Overviews citing it Also in the top ten results Sectors
hippo.co.za Comparison platform 28 17 7 of 17 Banking, insurance, medical aid, government and legal
autotrader.co.za Car marketplace 17 5 4 of 5 Automotive
carmag.co.za Motoring publication 14 2 0 of 2 Automotive
mybroadband.co.za Publisher 12 8 7 of 8 Telecoms, energy, retail
businesstech.co.za Publisher 9 7 4 of 7 Banking, property, automotive, telecoms, education and jobs
property24.com Property search portal 8 4 3 of 4 Property
dailyinvestor.com Business and investing news 6 4 1 of 4 Medical aid, property, energy

The "also in the top ten" column matters for targeting. A cited page does not always rank well for the same search: carmag.co.za was cited in 2 automotive Overviews without appearing in the top ten ordinary results for either. Ranking reports alone would miss it. Our full analysis is in which sites Google's AI cites most in South Africa.

How to run digital PR for AI visibility

  1. Map the sources for your questions. Follow how to find the sources AI cites in your category. List the publishers, comparison sites and communities cited for your buyers' questions, down to the specific pages.
  2. Audit what those pages say about you. Are you mentioned? Correctly? With current products, prices and areas served?
  3. Fix the facts you can fix. Keep your listings on comparison sites and marketplaces complete and current. Send publishers corrections with a source.
  4. Pitch stories built on information the page does not have yet. Original South African data with its method explained, an expert who can answer a specific buyer question, or a clear explanation of a change that affects buyers.
  5. Aim for the page types answers draw from. Round-ups, comparisons, cost guides and explainers. In our sample, "best", "cheapest" and similar list searches showed an AI Overview on 58 of 59 searches (98.3%), so the articles that answer them are worth being in.
  6. Show up in communities as yourself. facebook.com (54 times), youtube.com (33) and reddit.com (10) were among the most-cited domains in our sample. Helpful answers and explainer videos from your own experts, clearly from your brand, belong in the plan. Why Google's AI cites Facebook, YouTube and Reddit looks at this in detail.

What makes coverage quotable by AI?

The research that coined the term GEO tested what makes a page more visible in AI answers. Aggarwal and colleagues (KDD 2024) rewrote pages in different ways and scored how much of each AI answer drew on them, weighted by where in the answer it appeared:

Change made to the page Visibility score (unchanged page: 19.5)
Adding quotations from relevant sources 27.8
Adding statistics 25.9
Citing sources 24.9
Keyword stuffing 17.8

The study changed the source pages themselves, and results varied by subject area. For PR, the lesson is about what you hand a journalist. A story that arrives with a dated statistic and its source, a quotable sentence from a named expert and a link to the method gives the published article the features that scored best. A press release full of repeated brand keywords gives it the one that scored worst.

How do you measure digital PR for AI visibility?

Traditional PR measure AI visibility measure
Pieces of coverage Coverage on pages that AI answers cite for your questions
Reach of the publication Presence on the questions the page answers, before and after
Backlinks earned How often answers cite the covered page, and your own site
Share of coverage AI share of voice on unbranded questions
Tone of coverage Accuracy of how answers describe you

Measure the target questions before the coverage runs, then again once the article is published and indexed, on the same engines with the same wording. Give it a few weeks: answers built from a live search can change soon after a page is indexed, while answers drawn from a model's training data change only when a new model version is released. Report a change only when each figure rests on at least 30 answers, for the reasons in how to measure GEO.

Frequently asked questions

What is digital PR for AI visibility?

It is the work of earning accurate mentions of your brand on the publications, comparison sites and communities that AI answers already cite, so that assistants find you when they read those pages to answer a buyer's question.

Which South African publications does Google's AI cite?

In CitedAI's analysis of 96 Google South Africa searches on 11 October 2026, cited publishers included carmag.co.za (14 times), mybroadband.co.za (12), businesstech.co.za (9) and dailyinvestor.com (6). Which sites matter for you depends on the questions your buyers ask.

Is a brand mention without a link useful for AI visibility?

It can be. An AI answer is written from the text of the pages it reads, so a clear, accurate mention of your brand on a page the answer cites gives it something to draw on, with or without a link.

How long does digital PR take to show up in AI answers?

Answers built from a live web search can change within weeks of the coverage being published and indexed. Answers drawn from what a model learned in training change only when a new model version is released.

How do we measure whether PR improved our AI visibility?

Measure the questions the target pages answer before the coverage runs, then again once it is indexed, on the same engines with the same wording. Report a change only when each figure rests on at least 30 answers.
